Big League Ballpark Notes

Pope Benedict celebrated Mass at Nationals Park Thursday. Except for extreme congestion on Washington's Metro system, everything went smoothly as a capacity crowd cheered the Pontiff at the new baseball park ... Sad news. A fan leaving a Mets game at Shea Stadium (left) died after tumbling over the side of an escalator ... What intrigue! Construction workers at the new Yankee Stadium, scheduled to open next year, foiled a plot to jinx the new park. A worker who roots for the Red Sox had buried a David Ortiz jersey in cement ... Unlike in February at the first public hearing on the subject at St. Petersburg's City Council, this time there were more supporters of a new ballpark for the Rays than opponents.
