The announcement has been made: the winner of our 12th annual Ballpark Of The Year award is Salt River Fields. You can read the press release sent to the media here.
Knights need new park
The Charlotte, NC market has needed a new ballpark for years, as Knights Stadium (left) comes in dead last in our ranking of International League facilities. There might be some movement toward a new park, as the team is negotiating with Duke Energy to be a "founding sponsor" of the endeavor (and probably end up with its name on the new park).

If you'll be anywhere near Denver this weekend, please come and see me! I'll be appearing at the wonderful B's Ballpark Museum this Saturday afternoon from 1:00 until 6:00 (details here). If you buy an autographed copy of our Touring The Majors® poster there, you'll receive free admission for two to the Museum. The following day, I'll be presenting the plaque for our Ballpark of the Year to the Rockies for their spring-training facility in Arizona. |
Up on the rooftop
Apparently overdue: all of the rooftop businesses along Waveland Ave. and Sheffield Ave. that look down into Wrigley Field have now received health inspections. City officials scrambled to complete the inspections after the Chicago Tribune ran an expose in June showing that some hadn't been assessed in years.
Big League ballpark notes
Disappointing: the Detroit Economic Growth Corp. refused an offer by Chevrolet to maintain the ballfield on the site where Tiger Stadium once stood. The photo to the left shows that site just last month ... The Marlins gave the media a tour of their new park, which will open next spring. Team president David Samson emphasized that the project is "not one dollar" over budget, while being right on schedule for completion. Opposing teams are very much looking forward to the Marlins moving out of Sun Life Stadium ... Very impressive: the Red Sox' consecutive sell-out streak reached 700 games last week ... Beer vendor Emmanuel Marlow saved a child's life during a game at Nationals Park in D.C. ... Here's a novel idea: retail space within the parking garages being constructed at the Marlins' new stadium ... The Red Sox announced ticket prices at their new spring training park that opens next year.
