Contest 42
***This is not our current contest***
The World Series is over. Spring training seems centuries away. It's a dark time for many baseball enthusiasts.
But that doesn't mean that NO baseball news is being made! That's what this Contest is about: ballpark news that happens or has happened in between Major League seasons.
To be eligible for the prize drawing, your entry must contain at least six correct answers (out of the eight questions). Note that question #6 has two parts, and you must provide correct responses to both parts for that question to be counted as having a correct answer.
To enter this Contest, send an e-mail to this address: "baseballcontest" and then the "at" sign (you know, "@") and then "earthlink.net." Why am I spelling it out like this instead of merely providing the exact e-mail address? Because nasty spiders and bots crawl through websites looking for e-mail addresses they can add to mailing lists for spam. No thank you!
A grand prize will be awarded to an entry that is chosen at random from among all entries with the required number of correct responses (and that followed the rules!). The prize will be the winner's choice: either a poster of Wrigley Field or a Ballpark Blueprint poster of Camden Yards (left). Both are available for sale at the Grand Slam Mall.
Make sure your entry says "Contest 42" in the subject line of
your e-mail. You must also provide
your name and the city in which you live, and whether you consent
to be added to our e-mail mailing list (see Rules below). Let me put
this bluntly: if you don't follow these rules, your entry will be
disqualified. Also, because we will ship the prize to you if your
entry is chosen as the winner, we are now only accepting entries from
the United States (shipping outside of the U.S. is now even more difficult
than it used to be). If you're outside the U.S., feel free to enter if you want, but note that if you win, we can't send you the prize.
And if you use AOL or any e-mail software with a "filter," please please don't block me from being able to
respond to you in case you win. It's very frustrating to have
my e-mail returned, which happens a lot. Obviously,
you won't win the prize if I can't e-mail you to tell you so!
By the way, I used to respond personally to every single entry, telling
you whether you provided enough correct answers to qualify for the drawing.
The sheer volume of entries that we receive these days makes that impractical,
but please know that I scrutinize every one of the entries, and all of
them with the required number of correct responses (and that comply with the Contest rules) are placed in contention
for the drawing. Obviously, you will be contacted if your entry is selected
as the winner!
The correct answers for the previous contest are at the bottom of this page, by the way.
Good luck!
1. The left-hand photo below shows the home stadium of the Oakland A's. A massive renovation of this facility, which included the addition of 22,000 seats (mostly to accommodate the return of the Raiders), began at the conclusion of what season (i.e., what year)? By the way, since All Davis owns the Raiders, this new structure was derisively dubbed "Mount Davis"
2. The stadium shown in the right-hand shot above was demolished at the end of the 2005 season ... and the team's fans were a little disappointed that it didn't happen a week later. You see, the team was eliminated prior to making it to the World Series, so the demolition crew was able to do its work without having to wait until the end of the 2005 Fall Classic. Name this stadium.
3. During the off-season, many players -- especially those born in Latin American countries -- play in so-called Winter Leagues. Name the league which features both of these two ballparks: Estadio Julian Javier and Estadio Quisqueya.
4. And speaking of the Winter Leagues, name the ballpark where this winter's Caribbean World Series will be played.
5. The picture on the left-hand side below shows the current view of the site of what was once a long-time Minor League ballpark -- and for two years it was used in the Majors. It was torn down during the offseason following the 1959 season. Name this ballpark.
6. The Green Monster, reaching its current height of 37 feet, was constructed at Fenway Park prior which season? (Note that the wall wasn't dubbed "The Green Monster" for another ten years when the ads on it were painted over with, of course, green paint.) After which season were the "Monster Seats" on top of the wall (above right) added?
7. In order for construction to continue on Cincinnati's Great American Ballpark, the outfield seats in Cinergy Field -- formerly called Riverfront Stadium -- were removed (see below left) following the end of what season?
8. The Orioles vacated Memorial Stadium after the 1991 season, but it wasn't torn down right away. It housed Minor League baseball for one season and the NFL for two. When its grandstands were finally demolished, its concrete supports were dropped into the Chesapeake Bay to create an oyster reef. Fittingly, this demolition started during an offseason (photo above right). What was the year?
Official Rules of BASEBALLPARKS.COM's Contests
Only one entry per person. Entries must be e-mailed (click
here to set up an e-mail, and please make sure it says "Contest 42" in the subject box), and note that there is a new address to
use for Contest submissions! Because the winner will have the prize
shipped to him/her, you must be within the United States to be eligible.
Your e-mail must include your name and the city in which you live, and
you have to do one of the following: consent to having your e-mail
address added to our e-mail mailing list (periodically, I send out a newsletter
with ballpark updates and info on new baseball products offered on my
Grand Slam Mall e-commerce
site) or state that you do not want to have your address added or that
you're already on the list. Note that your e-mail address is never
sold to anyone else, nor is it used for any other purpose than to send
you our own (infrequent) newsletter. Therefore, after providing your guesses,
an acceptable ending to your e-mail could be:
John Doe
Dyersville, Iowa
Yes, you can add my e-mail address
The prize winner for the Contest will be selected at random by
the Webmaster's eleven year old from among all entries with the following: the required number of
correct answers; the contestant's name and city; whether or not permission is
granted to be added to our mailing list; the ability to e-mail the contestant
(i.e., if my e-mails to you are blocked -- meaning I can't communicate with you
by e-mail -- then you will not be eligible to win the prize); the contestant
resides in the U.S. If your entry lacks any of these items, it will be
disqualified. Due to the volume of entries received, there will be no
personal responses to each entry -- although every entry received will be
assessed to see if it contains the required information and graded. By entering this Contest, you consent that your name
and city will be shown toward the bottom of the page of the next Contest,
provided your entry is chosen as a prize winner. You are ineligible if you
have won one of BASEBALLPARKS.COM's contests in the past 12 months. No purchase is necessary. Void where
prohibited. Correct answers will be revealed at the bottom of the
next Contest. And the most important rule is: have fun with it!
