Contest 43
***This is not our current contest***
Baseball is being played again, and that's always a good thing. But our National Pastime doesn't have the sports stage all to itself. No, baseball must share the limelight for the first couple of months of its season.
This Contest looks at non-baseball sports facilities that are in the same market as a pro-baseball franchise. The point is that these facilities are utilized at the same time of year as the ballparks. I think you'll get the idea when you start reading the questions.
To be eligible for the prize drawing, your entry must contain at least nine correct answers (out of the 12 questions). Please be careful to make sure you are answering what is being asked. For instance, if the question asks for the name of a sports facility, provide its name, not the name of the city. To enter, send an e-mail to the address in the box below.

A grand prize will be awarded to an entry that is chosen at random from among all entries with the required number of correct responses (and that followed the rules!).
Make sure your entry says "Contest 43" in the subject line of
your e-mail. You must also provide
your name and the city in which you live, and whether you consent
to be added to our e-mail mailing list (see Rules below). Let me put
this bluntly: if you don't follow these rules, your entry will be
disqualified. Also, because we will ship the prize to you if your
entry is chosen as the winner, we are now only accepting entries from
the United States (shipping outside of the U.S. is now even more difficult
than it used to be). If you're outside the U.S., feel free to enter if you want, but note that if you win, we can't send you the prize.
And if you use AOL or any e-mail software with a "filter," please please don't block me from being able to
respond to you in case you win. It's very frustrating to have
my e-mail returned, which happens a lot. Obviously,
you won't win the prize if I can't e-mail you to tell you so and find out your address!
By the way, I used to respond personally to every single entry, telling
you whether you provided enough correct answers to qualify for the drawing.
The sheer volume of entries that we receive these days makes that impractical,
but please know that I scrutinize every one of the entries, and all of
them with the required number of correct responses (and that comply with the Contest rules) are placed in contention
for the drawing. Obviously, you will be contacted if your entry is selected
as the winner!
The correct answers for the previous contest are at the bottom of this page, by the way.
A SPECIAL THANKS TO MEG MINARD, A GREAT FRIEND OF THIS WEBSITE, FOR INSPIRING THIS CONTEST
Good luck!
1. In a particular city, the Major League Baseball team's park is named after a beer and their NBA/NHL/Arena Football facility is named after a cola. Name the city.
2. Name the NBA/NHL arena that is 2.5 miles (as the crow flies, as they say) from the big-league ballpark shown in the lefthand portion of the photo below.
3. There are two cities in the Central Division of the NHL that also have minor-league (as opposed to Major League) baseball teams. In fact, the two hockey arenas are shown below. Name these two arenas (not the cities).
4. Minor league hockey and arena football are played in U.S. Bank Arena. Name the big-league baseball park next door to it.
5. Minor league basketball's Xplosion plays in the same city as what Major League Baseball stadium?
6. Name the NHL arena in the same market (but not the same city) as the MLB stadium shown on the left below.
7. An NBA team plays in an arena that is directly next door to (well, shares a parking lot with) the baseball stadium shown above right. Name that NBA team.
8. Name the city in which the current NBA team plays in an arena that is directly across Interstate 394 from the site where their Major League baseball team's new stadium is about to be constructed.
9. Name the NBA arena that's in the same city as the minor-league baseball park shown above (both exterior and interior views are provided).
10. Name the Major League baseball stadium that is located within three blocks of the arena of the city's NBA and NHL teams and the arena of the city's minor league hockey team (yes, those two hockey teams play in different facilities).
11. There is only one NBA market that doesn't also have a pro-baseball -- regular-season MLB or affiliated Minor League -- team. Name that city's NBA team.
12. There are three NHL markets that don't also have a big-league or affiliated Minor League baseball team (although two have independent-league ball teams). Name those three cities.
Official Rules of BASEBALLPARKS.COM's Contests
Only one entry per person. Entries must be e-mailed using the address above. Please make sure it says "Contest 43" in the subject box. Because the winner will have the prize
shipped to him/her, you must be within the United States to be eligible.
Your e-mail must include your name and the city in which you live, and
you have to do one of the following: consent to having your e-mail
address added to our e-mail mailing list (periodically, I send out a newsletter
with ballpark updates and info on new baseball products offered on my
Grand Slam Mall e-commerce
site) or state that you do not want to have your address added or that
you're already on the list. Note that your e-mail address is never
sold to anyone else, nor is it used for any other purpose than to send
you our own (infrequent) newsletter. Therefore, after providing your guesses,
an acceptable ending to your e-mail could be:
John Doe
Dyersville, Iowa
Yes, you can add my e-mail address
The prize winner for the Contest will be selected at random by
the Webmaster's eleven year old from among all entries with the following: the required number of
correct answers; the contestant's name and city; whether or not permission is
granted to be added to our mailing list; the ability to e-mail the contestant
(i.e., if my e-mails to you are blocked -- meaning I can't communicate with you
by e-mail -- then you will not be eligible to win the prize); the contestant
resides in the U.S. If your entry lacks any of these items, it will be
disqualified. Due to the volume of entries received, there will be no
personal responses to each entry -- although every entry received will be
assessed to see if it contains the required information and graded. By entering this Contest, you consent that your name
and city will be shown toward the bottom of the page of the next Contest,
provided your entry is chosen as a prize winner. You are ineligible if you
have won one of BASEBALLPARKS.COM's contests in the past 12 months. No purchase is necessary. Void where
prohibited. Correct answers will be revealed at the bottom of the
next Contest. And the most important rule is: have fun with it!
