Contest 44

When the baseball season reaches its climax, it's also time for the NFL to begin regular-season play. Since Contest 43 was about cities that have both pro baseball and "winter" sports (typically the NBA and NHL), this one contains questions about cities and facilities where both our National Pastime and pro football is -- or has been -- played.

To be eligible for the prize drawing, your entry must contain at least eight correct answers (out of the ten questions). Please be careful to make sure you are answering what is being asked. For instance, if the question asks for the name of a sports facility, provide its name, not the name of the city or the team. To enter, send an e-mail to the address in the box below.

Send your Contest entries to:

A grand prize will be awarded to an entry that is chosen at random from among all entries with the required number of correct responses (and that followed the rules!).

Make sure your entry says "Contest 44" in the subject line of your e-mail. You must also provide your name and the city in which you live, and whether you consent to be added to our e-mail mailing list (see Rules below).  Let me put this bluntly:  if you don't follow these rules, your entry will be disqualified.  Also, because we will ship the prize to you if your entry is chosen as the winner, we are now only accepting entries from the United States (shipping outside of the U.S. is now even more difficult than it used to be). If you're outside the U.S., feel free to enter if you want, but note that if you win, we can't send you the prize.

And if you use AOL or any e-mail software with a "filter," please please don't block me from being able to respond to you in case you win.   It's very frustrating to have my e-mail returned, which happens a lot.  Obviously, you won't win the prize if I can't e-mail you to tell you so and find out your address!

By the way, I used to respond personally to every single entry, telling you whether you provided enough correct answers to qualify for the drawing. The sheer volume of entries that we receive these days makes that impractical, but please know that I scrutinize every one of the entries, and all of them with the required number of correct responses (and that comply with the Contest rules) are placed in contention for the drawing. Obviously, you will be contacted if your entry is selected as the winner!

The correct answers for the previous contest are at the bottom of this page, by the way.

Good luck!

1. It wasn't too many years ago that most large cities had a stadium where both baseball and football was played. This year, only three stadiums will host both NFL games and MLB contests. Name those three stadiums.

2. The spot from where the shot below was taken (which is quite near the banks of a river, I might add) is where a multi-purpose stadium once existed. It hosted both MLB and NFL teams, both of which now play in spectacular stadiums of their own -- one on each side of this site. The football facility can clearly be seen in this photo. In fact, both of the new stadiums utilize the parking lot on this site to accommodate their fans coming to their home games. Name the city where this site is located.

3. The stadium shown on the left below once housed both an NFL and MLB team. The baseball franchise moved out to a location closer to the city's downtown, while the football squad still plays here ... although it recently announced plans to move into a brand-new stadium several miles away in 2012. Name the football team that plays here. (I've masked the name of the stadium on the sign below.)

4. The aerial shot on the right above shows a currently used NFL stadium that was constructed on the same spot as a multi-use stadium that was used by both the NFL and MLB. What is the name of the current *baseball* park in this city?

5. There are two markets with an American League baseball team and an NFC football team where the following is true: in both instances, their stadiums are not technically in the same city; in both markets, the area's football and baseball teams have never shared the same stadium. Name all four teams involved (the two American League baseball teams and the two NFC football teams).

6. The stadium in the shot on the left side below is currently used by a MLB team, although a facility to replace it is currently under construction. Until 1983, an NFL team also played here. Name that NFL team.

7. Until 2002, this city's NFL and MLB teams shared a stadium. In 2003, the NFL franchise moved into the facility (which was almost right across the street) shown above right. In 2004, the baseball team also moved just a couple of blocks, into a new baseball-only park. In what city did all of this take place?

8. Although several pro stadiums are named for financial institutions, only one NFL venue was renamed in January of 2004 for a bank. There is a baseball franchise in the International League located in a suburb of this city. Name the NFL team that plays in the stadium named for a bank.

9. The photo above was taken this season from the outer concourse of the upper deck of a current Major League ballpark. This construction site will one day be a mammoth stadium for an NFL team. Name that football team.

10. In one market, the NFL stadium is named after the founder and still-current owner of the football team while the baseball team plays in the International League in a ballpark that is eleven miles from the football venue. Name the baseball team's ballpark.

Official Rules of BASEBALLPARKS.COM's Contests

Only one entry per person.  Entries must be e-mailed using the address above. Please make sure it says "Contest 44" in the subject box. Because the winner will have the prize shipped to him/her, you must be within the United States to be eligible.

Your e-mail must include your name and the city in which you live, and you have to do one of the following:  consent to having your e-mail address added to our e-mail mailing list (periodically, I send out a newsletter with ballpark updates and info on new baseball products offered on my Grand Slam Mall e-commerce site) or state that you do not want to have your address added or that you're already on the list.  Note that your e-mail address is never sold to anyone else, nor is it used for any other purpose than to send you our own (infrequent) newsletter.  Therefore, after providing your guesses, an acceptable ending to your e-mail could be:

John Doe
Dyersville, Iowa
Yes, you can add my e-mail address
myname@email.com

The prize winner for the Contest will be selected at random by the Webmaster's twelve year old from among all entries with the following: the required number of correct answers; the contestant's name and city; whether or not permission is granted to be added to our mailing list; the ability to e-mail the contestant (i.e., if my e-mails to you are blocked -- meaning I can't communicate with you by e-mail -- then you will not be eligible to win the prize); the contestant resides in the U.S.  If your entry lacks any of these items, it will be disqualified.  Due to the volume of entries received, there will be no personal responses to each entry -- although every entry received will be assessed to see if it contains the required information and graded. By entering this Contest, you consent that your name and city will be shown toward the bottom of the page of the next Contest, provided your entry is chosen as a prize winner.  You are ineligible if you have won one of BASEBALLPARKS.COM's contests in the past 12 months.  No purchase is necessary.  Void where prohibited.  Correct answers will be revealed at the bottom of the next Contest.  And the most important rule is:  have fun with it!
