Contest 45
Some of the best movies ever made were filmed largely in ballparks: Bull Durham, Pride of the Yankees, A League Of Their Own, etc. How much do you know about the ballparks used in the making of movies and TV shows? Well, that's what this Contest is all about!
To be eligible for the prize drawing, your entry must contain at least seven correct answers (out of the ten questions). Please be careful to make sure you are answering what is being asked. For instance, if the question asks for the name of a ballpark, don't just list the city it's in. To enter, send an e-mail to the address in the box below.

A grand prize will be awarded to the entry that is chosen at random from among all entries with the required number of correct responses (and that followed the rules!).
Make sure your entry says "Contest 45" in the subject line of
your e-mail. You must also provide
your name and the city in which you live, and whether you consent
to be added to our e-mail mailing list (see Rules below). Let me put
this bluntly: if you don't follow these rules, your entry will be
disqualified. Also, because we will ship the prize to you if your
entry is chosen as the winner, we are now only accepting entries from
the United States (shipping outside of the U.S. is now even more difficult
than it used to be). If you're outside the U.S., feel free to enter if you want, but note that if you win, we can't send you the prize.
And if you use AOL or any e-mail software with a "filter," please please don't block me from being able to
respond to you in case you win. It's very frustrating to have
my e-mail returned, which happens a lot. Obviously,
you won't win the prize if I can't e-mail you to tell you so and find out your address!
By the way, I used to respond personally to every single entry, telling
you whether you provided enough correct answers to qualify for the drawing.
The sheer volume of entries that we receive these days makes that impractical,
but please know that I scrutinize every one of the entries, and all of
them with the required number of correct responses (and that comply with the Contest rules) are placed in contention
for the drawing. Obviously, you will be contacted if your entry is selected
as the winner!
The correct answers for the previous contest are at the bottom of this page, by the way.
Good luck!
1. In the movie The Rookie, which was the true story of pitcher Jim Morris (played by Dennis Quaid), the scene depicting his Major League debut was filmed in the actual ballpark where the event happened. Name the ballpark.
2. The ballpark below, now largely abandoned, was the home field in a 1988 movie starring Kevin Costner. What is the name of this ballpark (and be careful, because the stadium that was built to replace it in this city has a similar name)?
3. Made for a measly $1 million, Bang The Drum Slowly is the favorite baseball movie of many fans. Name the ballpark where most of the baseball scenes were filmed.
4. The photo on the left side below shows the site where a fancy ballpark once existed. This ballpark was not only used by a Minor League team for decades, it also briefly hosted a Major League franchise. It was also where the episodes of TV's Home Run Derby were filmed. The episodes aired in 1959. Name the ballpark.
5. The shot on the right above shows how a certain ball field looks today. It was the site of a successful movie that was released in 1989. Name the movie.
6. A League of Their Own is one of the sport's best-known films, hitting #1 at the box office in July of 1992. League Stadium in Huntingburg, Indiana was utilized to depict the home park of the Rockford Peaches. What historic ballpark was used to depict the home facility of the Racine Belles?
7. Billy Chapel, played by Kevin Costner, is a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers in the movie For Love of the Game. Most of the movie concentrates on his last start in the big leagues at the end of a two-decade career. The movie is set at the home field of the Tigers' opponents that day. Name the ballpark.
8. In 1984, Barry Levinson was the director of The Natural, starring Robert Redford as Roy Hobbs. He played for the fictional New York Knights. What now-demolished ballpark was used to depict the Knights' home stadium?
9. A young John Cusack played Buck Weaver in the film Eight Men Out, a dramatization of the Black Sox scandal of 1919. The minor-league ballpark shown above was used to film scenes that were meant to depict the White Sox' home stadium, Comiskey Park. Name the park.
10. In 1983, a relatively unknown Sharon Stone played the wife of a minor-league ballplayer in a NBC TV drama. He played for a fictitious team called the Bluebirds, and MTM Productions (which had a big hit at the time with Hill Street Blues) even constructed a ballpark just to use in the filming of this short-lived series (it appears they shot eight episodes, but only four aired before the series was permanently yanked). What was the name of this depressing TV show?
Official Rules of BASEBALLPARKS.COM's Contests
Only one entry per person. Entries must be e-mailed using the address above. Please make sure it says "Contest 45" -- and nothing else -- in the subject box. Because the winner will have the prize
shipped to him/her, you must be within the United States to be eligible.
Your e-mail must include your name and the city in which you live, and
you have to do one of the following: consent to having your e-mail
address added to our e-mail mailing list (periodically, I send out a newsletter
with ballpark updates and info on new baseball products offered on my
Grand Slam Mall e-commerce
site) or state that you do not want to have your address added or that
you're already on the list. Note that your e-mail address is never
sold to anyone else, nor is it used for any other purpose than to send
you our own (infrequent) newsletter. Therefore, after providing your guesses,
an acceptable ending to your e-mail could be:
John Doe
Dyersville, Iowa
Yes, you can add my e-mail address
myname@email.com
The prize winner for the Contest will be selected at random by
the Webmaster's twelve year old from among all entries with the following: the required number of
correct answers; the contestant's name and city; whether or not permission is
granted to be added to our mailing list; the ability to e-mail the contestant
(i.e., if my e-mails to you are blocked -- meaning I can't communicate with you
by e-mail -- then you will not be eligible to win the prize); the contestant
resides in the U.S. If your entry lacks any of these items, it will be
disqualified. Due to the volume of entries received, there will be no
personal responses to each entry -- although every entry received will be
assessed to see if it contains the required information and graded. By entering this Contest, you consent that your name
and city will be shown toward the bottom of the page of the next Contest,
provided your entry is chosen as a prize winner. You are ineligible if you
have won one of BASEBALLPARKS.COM's contests in the past 12 months. No purchase is necessary. Void where
prohibited. Correct answers will be revealed at the bottom of the
next Contest. And the most important rule is: have fun with it!
